Why My Kids Don't Watch TV.....

Or very little...

Because it is not unusual...it is everyday for hours a day...that I find Ben and Anna deeply engaged in a game together.  Creating together.  They seek each other out for companionship.

They are never bored.  They don't expect to be entertained.

They truly play with all of their toys.  Constantly recreating.  A nursery rhyme music box Ben got at 9M, that I put away for Beatrice, finally resurfaced and the kids have really been have a blast playing dance party to the songs it plays, showing Beatrice how it works, and enjoying it all over again.  Never outgrowing the simple pleasures.

They have time for each other and to build relationships.

They have time imagine and take comfort.

Time to be silly.  Time to be kids.  Time to be themselves.

agree with your sentiments, but sometimes it is so very trying! we limit tv as much as possible but some days are just so difficult.

That's terrific, Jamie. I admire your dedication! I'd love to be able to get there!

This sounds like my John Paul and Thérèse. The imaginative play they come up with is fascinating to watch. That said I am known to turn the TV on so the house is quiet and I can make a business call or 2. :)

Yes, we are not a NO TV family. We are just a very selective TV family. I can tell you that when they are sick they are allowed to sit on the couch and watch whatevr they want all day long. But, because TV is a rarity it really is a treat.

Laura somehow your post got lost in blogger somehow and I JUST got it! Sorry about that!! But I totally agree. We are not a NOO TV family. We just limit it..A LOT. And possibly more important is we are very particular about what they CAN watch. We don't have cable so there is no Disney channel and there is no Nickelodeon, and there is no Sprout etc etc. Also I find if you just put the TV on then it is much harder to pick and choose what they watch AND they tend to watch more because just ONE more show etc. So, if I out on PBS and they watch Dinosaur Train (a show we like) and next is Sid the Science Kid (a show we don't like them to watch) am I going to turn it off? Less likely. But if I put in a DVD it comes to an end and then we are done. And I have chosen exactly what they have watched. If that makes sense. Rough days and TV go together..totally agree. Also sick days and TV!
